hey all - I’m exploring the canvas dashboard setup and usage (its been an experience). I am REALLY struggling to upload a simple image. I have a .png file uploaded into Google Drive, copied the share link (share link is open to everyone as per CSS and Holistics notes) :
I have tried every combination of bg_image: “https//ABC_ETCXXXXXXXXXXXXX”. Including url, < scr >, etc but not luck.
Anybody else struggling or have a workaround that might work?

I believe this issue is more about Google Drive images in general, rather than an issue of Canvas Dashboard specifically.
The Google Drive link that you obtained (when sharing a Google Drive image) is a link that opens the Google Drive web page. It is not the link for the image data alone.
As far as I know, Google Drive (or even Google Photos) is a storage service rather than a hosting service.
I found that there are several unofficial ways to obtain the exact link for the image data alone from Google Drive. Google Drive does not provide official support, so these methods may break any time or even have security risks. If you really need to, please try these at your own risk:
